This publication presents case studies on: Effects of the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake and the Indian Ocean Tsunami in Aceh Province; Engineering research for non-engineered buildings; Critical infrastructure, interdependencies, and resilience; Building a resilient organization.

This is the Spring 2007 publication of “The Bridge” published by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). The publication opens with a letter from the editor about Engineering for the threat of natural disasters, and presents case studies on:

  • Effects of the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake and the Indian Ocean Tsunami in Aceh Province
  • Engineering research for non-engineered buildings
  • Critical infrastructure, interdependencies, and resilience
  • Building a resilient organization

Articles relevant to the integrity and resiliency of structures under stress from hurricanes and earthquakes. Not specific to water and sewer systems, but contain useful information and concepts.

An important point emphasized in the last paper recognizes the challenges in addressing High Impact Low Probability events, which is typically the biggest challenge for water and wastewater systems in balancing cost vs risk.
